The historical information
"Scotch" is the trade mark of company 3M . That’s why a lot of companies
use this word “scotch” as the synonym to “sealing packaging tape”. We do the same.
The scotch itself was found out by young engineer Richard Drew, (company 3M ), in 1930.
Firstly bakers and grocers used it as the binder for cellophane package. Then thermo tape was contrived
and used for such aims, but up to that moment Americans found out a lot of other scotch applications.
So it was widely adopted and became very popular. Close translation of the word “scotch” means
"something of Scottish origin". This name of sealing packaging tape secured for itself, because Americans
who found it out (company 3M ) were of Scottish nationality.
Materials and technical terms
The sealing packaging tape is winding on carton core and consists from the following components:
- Adhesive coating (acrylic adhesive emulsion and master tint)
- Flex printing logo (master tint) is absent in the simple sealing packaging tape
- Polypropylene film (BOPP)
Specific features of sealing packaging tape are based on the physical effect – ADHESION (from lat. adhasio- sealing, binding).
It means the binding process of fluid and stolid materials in the places of their surfaces contacts.
Theory of adhesion explains this phenomenon by intermolecular attraction, which prevents from substance crippling.
Adhesion of two surfaces can be of chemical, electric or magnetic nature and be stipulated by the mechanical surfaces’ interaction
or defined by all these features. In scotch production chemical adhesion is used. It is produced by the acrylic adhesion emulsion,
which is used as the sealing coating film basis. Adhesion is the main specific characteristic feature of “scotch”- sealing packaging tape.
